The major search engines provide the opportunity to advertise with text or image ads on a huge range of publishers’ sites. As with Paid Search (PPC) ads on the search engine results page, these content network ads are targeted to sites with keywords matching your campaign. Ads on the content network can be charged on a cost per click (CPC) or cost per thousand impressions (CPM) basis.
As an advertiser on Google’s Adwords program you can opt in to also display your ads across the content network of sites; Google says their content network reaches 64% of Internet users around the world, and includes some very well-known websites. Publishers who will publish your ads are enrolled in Google’s Adsense program.
The most popular form of content network advertising is text ads which can be delivered in an array of IAB-sized formats. In addition to text ads, Adsense also allows for image ads, flash ads and video ads.
Yahoo!’s content match program works in a similar way to Google’s, with targeted text ads appearing across a large network of publishers as well as newsletters and emails.
